October is Fire Prevention Month, and this year’s theme is: Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.
Smoke detectors save lives!
A fire can quickly engulf your home, and a fully functional smoke alarm gives you the time to get out.
Smoke detectors should be tested monthly, the batteries changed twice and year, and the unit replaced every ten years. And while no one likes the sound of a screeching alarm, it’s the sound that could save lives.
Aside from working smoke detectors, there are other things you can do to help protect your home, loved ones, pets and possessions:
- Have properly rated and operational fire extinguishers placed strategically in your home and ensure that everyone knows how to use them.
- Keep matches, lighters, lit candles and other combustible materials away from children.
- Have and practice an escape plan.
