Protecting Your Home From Flooding
As the effects of climate change become more prominent, municipalities across Canada are making annual improvements to the complex system of underground pipes, sewers and catch basins in order to reduce the risk of basement flooding. However, these measures alone cannot fully protect a home from flooding.

In order to help mitigate this risk, many cities and towns offer homeowners financial subsidies to install sump pumps with sump pump overflows and/or backwater valves, and/or disconnect foundation drains from the floor drain. To learn if your area offers this program, search your town or city and "flood subsidy program". Additionally, many municipalities offer free eavestrough downspout drain connection to help not overtax strained municipal systems during times of heavy rains.

It is important to remember that while municipalities are taking the necessary steps to reduce the risk of flooding, there are still steps that homeowners can take to protect their property from flooding. For those living in areas where water can enter the home through windows and doors due to heavy rains or rising lake or river levels, overland flood insurance may be a viable option.

Before signing up or renewing a house insurance policy, it is important that you understand the coverage limits, exceptions, and limitations of the policy. As an example, while a flood may result in $40,000 worth of damage, your existing policy may only cover $10,000. To avoid any confusion or miscommunication, it is best to speak to your insurance professional before a disaster occurs.
